Simply said, it does the same things as a Windows operating system, for instance drawing, gaming, writing, calculating, any office work, ... You may find the history of it on Wikipedia (Linux).

Generally, every Linux system is inherently secure. But to go the extra mile in security there is nothing better than Debian systems. Compared to others, these systems have a huge community base who scrutinizes the code for any errors. The reason why it is called opensource code. This code is looked after in every little detail. While others Linux distributions may look more modern and are more 'agile', Debian is a bit more 'old-fashion' but by far a lot more secure.

Debian systems are best for background services, for instance databases, web services, ... Other distributions might be used as a Desktop, for instance Linux Mint (looks more closer to Windows), Ubuntu – both based on Debian.
